Burlesque Diva - Celebrating The Art of the Tease
Burlesque developed during the Victorian era with a mixture of satire, wit, music, and dance often with sexually suggestive overtones for a working class audience at the expense of upper class social values. The striptease became a common burlesque act as more repressive measures began being taken against women exposing their bodies. By the 1930’s burlesque theaters were forced to close.
In burlesque's heyday (those golden days before television, when people had to go out to be entertained) burlesque was a grand affair! A burlesque show combined live music, comedians, variety acts, a chorus line and of course, glamorous burlesque headliners, in an elegant theatre with a full orchestra, grand sets and elaborate costumes! A burlesque queen in this golden era would enchant with her beauty, delight with her dance, and captivate her audience with the Art of the Tease! Full nudity was rarely included - fans, pasties and other skimpy coverages were employed to show just the right amount of skin without the vugarity employed by many strip clubs.
There has been a revival of burlesque since the 1990’s with Burleque Reviews being held world wide. Dita Von Teese and other modern performers celebrate a womans curves with elaborate vintage costumes, retro tunes, and a lot of teasing fun! Today's burlesque is a softer, curvier approach to sexuality, bringing mystery, allure, fantasy and glamour back to the stage truly celebrating the Art of the Tease. Burlesque Diva celebrates this glamour for modern performers and anyone just wanting a little retro style in their lives.
